WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A NEW SET OF COASTERS
When it comes to tableware, coasters are a great way to prevent your coffee tables, bars and other tabletops from being marked by the condensation caused by drinks. Like placemats, they are not only functional but stylish with a huge range of designs, materials and colours to match your home decor. Before you buy a new set, consider these factors:
-
Material. Coasters come in many different materials, from porous natural stone to cotton, cork and PVC.
-
Absorbency. A coaster’s main job is to soak up liquid before it ruins your beautiful surfaces. Make sure your coaster has excellent water-absorbency to keep your tables clean and mark-free.
-
Grip. A good coaster will keep your drinks stable and upright. Choose a coaster backing that grips the table surface properly, such as cork, to prevent accidental spills.
-
Style. Coasters can enhance your table setting and blend seamlessly in with your chosen theme. There’s colourful, neutral, plain and patterned, as well as natural coasters which go beautifully with bohemian and coastal decor.
BEST ABSORBENT COASTERS
Coasters that are made out of natural stone are the best option for water absorption. Stone, such as ceramic and sandstone, is porous which means that it can quickly and easily absorb the moisture from your drinks before it stains your table surfaces.
MOST POPULAR NON-SLIP COASTERS
A coaster with a cork back is the best option for keeping coasters in place. Cork won’t move on slippery surfaces and will also effectively prevent heat, moisture and scratches from coming through and damaging tables and benchtops. Many of our ceramic coasters have a cork back to make them non-slip and are easy to wipe down.
BEST MATERIAL FOR COASTERS
The material you choose for your coaster will determine how well it functions and protects your surfaces from stains, scratches and other damage. There are both natural and synthetic materials to choose from. Here are some of the most common:
-
Cork coasters
-
Ceramic coasters
-
Resin coasters
-
Wood coasters
-
Silicone coasters
-
Rattan coasters
-
PVC coasters

CLEANING AND CARING FOR YOUR COASTERS
Most coasters can simply be wiped over with a damp cloth and some detergent to remove stains. You can also use a little food-safe mineral oil or beeswax to occasionally polish wooden coasters and prevent them from drying out. Unless the packaging on a coaster set states that it is dishwasher-safe, coasters should not be submerged in water.

FAQS:
What are the best types of coasters?
Ceramic coasters with a cork backing are a popular choice as cork has excellent water absorption and is non-slip while the ceramic surface is both attractive and easy to wipe down and clean. If you’re after a natural material, rattan and wood are easy to style with your tableware and are strong and stable. PVC coasters are a top choice if you’re looking for a flexible coaster that protects surfaces and is super easy to clean.
What are coasters used for?
Drink coasters were made specifically to stop drinkware from leaving condensation rings and marks on surfaces like coffee tables and benchtops. Coasters are placed beneath the drink to absorb and prevent any moisture from staining the surface beneath. They can also be a handy place to rest your spoon while cooking and can be placed on top of your drink to indicate you are not finished with it. Shop our range of coasters and placemats in any style you need, from natural wood and rattan to ornate patterns and colourful masterpieces by Australian artists.
