Make the perfect pancakes or crepes with our range of crepe pans available

A crepe is a delicious French-style pancake that is commonly eaten for breakfast or as a treat any time of the day. While pancakes are light and fluffy, a crepe is wafer-thin and delicate so that it can be either folded and topped or rolled and stuffed with anything from cream and fruit to cheese and mushrooms. A crepe pan makes it super easy for anyone to perfect this French delicacy at home. Before buying one, consider these factors:

  1. Material. Crepe pans come in different materials, including hard anodised aluminium, stainless steel and cast iron.

  2. Size. Choose a size that is comfortable for you to hold and manoeuvre so that flipping your crepe will be a breeze.

  3. Finish. A crepe pan with a non-stick finish is ready to go while a natural pan, such as cast iron, needs to be seasoned prior to cooking to develop its non-stick surface.

  4. Shape. A classic crepe pan is circular, but you can also find square-shaped crepe pans for something a little different.

Non-stick crepe pans make flipping easy

A non-stick pan is essential for getting your crepes to slide easily out of the pan in one piece, as well as for flipping them. We have non-stick pans by leading brands, such as the Tefal Unlimited Non-Stick Crepe Pan made out of aluminium with a scratch-resistant titanium coating. You can also see the Scanpan Classic Crepe Pan 25cm made with 100% recycled aluminium for fast heat conductivity and even heat distribution or the Wolstead Stonetek Crepe Pan made with a PFOA-free double non-stick coating.

Features to make sure you look out for:

These features will make cooking crepes effortless:

  • Shallow lip - A shallow lip is helpful for flipping crepes.

  • Non-stick surface - A non-stick coating will prevent the crepe from sticking to the pan.

  • Thin flat metal base - This is needed for quick and even heat distribution.

  • Heat-resistant handle - You'll be holding the handle a lot, so make sure it's made out of a material that stays cool to prevent burns, such as silicone.

Crepe pans with quick heat distribution and for even cooking time

A high-quality crepe maker with even heat distribution is key to cooking a crepe that's light, golden and crispy around the edges. A blue steel crepe pan is excellent for cooking crepes, as well as omelettes, tortillas, pancakes and more. It can be heated to higher temperatures than other crepe pans and develops a natural non-stick surface when properly seasoned.

Check out the Pyrolux Industry Blue Steel Crepe Pan and De Buyer Force Blue Steel Crepe Pan which can be used on any heat source, including induction stovetops, and is incredibly durable to last for years with good care.

How you can multitask you crepe pan

Crepe pans are very versatile and can be used for making more than just delicate crepes. They can double as a frying pan or griddle pan and be used to make a wide variety of food, including:

  • Crepes

  • Pancakes

  • Blinis

  • Tortillas

  • Omelettes

  • Seared meat

  • Pan-fried fish

  • Sautéed veggies

Crepe pan vs pancake pan

Technically, a crepe pan is a pan with a wide, flat surface and very shallow lip. It has a handle so that you can pour the batter into the centre and easily swirl it around to cover the entire base and form a thin crepe. A pancake pan is often interchangeable with a frypan or griddle which are both suitable for making and flipping pancakes. However, you can certainly use your crepe pan to also make pancakes, as well as blinis, eggs and much more.

Seasoning your new cast iron crepe pan

Cast iron and carbon steel are fantastic materials to use for a crepe pan as they are oven-safe, provide even heat distribution and can be used on any cooking surface, including gas, electric and induction cooktops, as well as open campfires. If you are using an unseasoned crepe pan rather than pre-seasoned or enameled cast iron, you'll need to season it before using to create a non-stick coating.

Start by scrubbing your new crepe pan in warm, soapy water. Dry thoroughly and apply a thin layer of vegetable oil to the inside and outside of the pan. Place it in an oven set to 180-200° Celsius and leave the pan to bake for around 1hr. Once cool, store it away in a dry place.

Dishwasher-safe makes cleaning easier

Look for a pan that's also dishwasher-safe to cut down your cleaning time. The Le Creuset Toughened Non-Stick Crepe Pan offers even heat distribution and a strong finish that can withstand any heat source. Simply pop it in the dishwasher for cleaning or use a cloth to wipe it out by hand.

FAQs:

What is the difference between a crepe pan and a frying pan? A crepe pan has a wide and flat base with a very shallow sloped lip that makes it easy to flip crepes with a spatula or toss them up into the air. A frying pan has a wide base with higher sloped edges for everything from sautéing vegetables to frying eggs and simmering sauces. While the shape is slightly different, a non-stick frypan can also be used to create beautiful crepes, while a crepe pan can be used to cook a wide range of food, including pancakes, flatbreads, omelettes, meat, seafood and more.

What is the best pan for crepes? If you want to master the art of cooking this French favourite, you need a crepe pan. With their shallow lip, flat and wide surface, non-stick properties and even heat distribution - they have been specially crafted to make pouring, swirling and flipping the crepe as simple as possible.
