USING YOUR SLOW COOKER - SIMPLE STEPS AND TERRIFIC TIPS

Let Kitchen Warehouse guide you through some simple steps and handy tips for using your slow cooker successfully, avoiding the mistakes first timers can make.

ASSEMBLING YOUR SLOW COOKER

  • Place the ceramic bowl in the metal base
  • Plug in slow cooker
  • Press power button
  • Place food in bowl and cover with lid (important)
  • Use display to programme time up to 24 hours by pressing + and -, and set temperature

LOW, MEDIUM OR HIGH?

High:

Suitable for recipes that are usually baked such as vegetable bakes, egg dishes, puddings, and rice dishes.

Medium:

Suitable for most recipes to cook over several hours and are set before leaving for work and eaten on return in the evening.

Low:

Suitable for recipes that use less tender cuts of meat and egg based desserts.

NOTE:

Keep warm is not a cooking programme - it is intended only for keeping food warm once it is cooked.

SLOW COOKER TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL SLOW COOKER RECIPES

  • Prevent the bowl from cracking by avoiding sudden temperature changes such as placing refrigerated food in the bowl.
  • Keep the lid on until time is up - slow cookers do not need checking up on, which is why you can leave the food to cook while you are out.
  • Sear foods immediately before cooking, do not sear then refrigerate.
  • Thaw all food before slow cooking..

TRANSLATING COOKTOP RECIPES INTO SLOW COOKER RECIPES

  • Use less liquid as moisture does not reduce in a slow cooker.
  • Increase amounts of herbs and seasonings to offset longer slow cooker cooking times.
  • For soups and stews leave a 5cm space at the top to allow for simmering.
  • Pasta, seafood milk, cream or sour cream should be added to the slow cooker 2 hours before serving.
  • Cut food to sizes that allow the same cooking time - denser vegetables should be cut to larger sizes than light vegetables. Cut meat into larger pieces to allow for longer cooking time.
